Why Pre Pro Is So Important?

This article showed that pre-production is so important because it will give you more ideas, make sure your script is accurate, and will also make the production process move a lot smoother. The first step of the production process is to brainstorm with others so you can make a solid idea together that is very diverse. The next step is to do research and fact check your script, this will make sure no one will question what you are writing/what is being said. Other parts of pre-production involve call sheets, location scouting, and storyboarding, which all make the whole process of actually shooting a lot faster and smoother and faster, saving both time and money.

TV vs Streaming

Netflix is changing the television landscape because it is giving viewers the ability to watch whatever show they want, when they want. This is a large factor in how they are killing off cable TV. Cable Tv is slowly losing their subscribers and Netflix is swiftly gaining their subscribers. In the future, Netflix, or other streaming networks, will have over taken cable TV and traditional, linear TV will slowly die out.

Entertainment Industry Careers

Three suggestions that the article has given me is to hustle hard for what I want, connections are the most important part of the industry, and a solid education will help cultivate your talent. Most of this advice is very similar to what I have heard from others, however the part of education being needed to cultivate your talent is kind of different. I have heard many people say that a formal form of education is not needed all the time for the entertainment industry and you can self teach. This is something that I will keep in mind in the future.

How A TV Show Gets Made

Television production is a very fast-paced operation and requires many episodes to be shot within a year, contrasting with a movie, where only one "episode", about 2 hours, is shot within a much longer time span. Television production requires a lot more script writing than a film because it is much longer. i find it interesting how shows can be finalized just hours before they are premiered to the audience.

Who Owns The Media?

I think the media being owned my just six companies can limit a lot of the stuff that we see online or on TV. News, TV shows, and movies are all limited by the partial monopoly that the big six have. All of the media goes through them first, and since there are so few options of where the media can go through, some great ideas that may be a little controversial won't be put through. A good thing about the media being owned by just a few companies is that there won't be as much trash stuff put out on the media. A con is that a lot of the stuff will be limited, such as news that won't share the full story.

The Assistant Director

The assistant director works directly with the crew and head of departments. They will make sure that everyone is ready before they start shooting and that the set is quiet and in order so everything will go right when they do the take. The assistant director will make sure that the set is disciplined and work as the director's right hand man.

The Lighting Dept.

The lighting department is so important because without them, you would not be able to see anything. The lighting crew makes sure the lights are placed in the correct positions, so it maintains continuity, realness, and matches the director's vision. They are responsible the lights are also held securely so they don't completely fall on the crew or talent, resulting in the death or injury of someone, plus a couple thousands of dollars worth in damage. The lighting department will make sure that the set will be well lit well before shooting actually starts.

Building Your Career

Three suggestions the article gave me on how to build my career is to keep having a good attitude, be motivated even when you're at a low position, and to not complain about having to do simple tedious tasks that seem like they aren't essential to the movie production. An internship can help because it gives you real world experience and connections in the industry. These can help because in the industry, connections and experience are crucial.

Sound Crew

The sound crew is so important because they record all of the noise that is to be heard on set, and make sure they don't record the sounds they don't want heard. This is important because sound alone can be half of the experience. The responsibilities range from recording the sound carefully with a boom pole, checking the quality of the sound, and set up all of the sound equipment.

Production Designer

Production designers are so important because they are responsible for putting a visual to the screenplay. The script consists of purely words so the production designer has to be able to form a visual in their head and then, bring that visual to life and work with a team to build a set for it.

Director of Photography

The director of photography is the reason how a movie becomes cinematic. They are responsible to make sure the light and the camera operation is done smoothly and correctly. They make sure that the movement of the camera will be very precise to achieve certain shots. The director of photography has to bring the director's vision to life.

Chain of Command On Set

He said to not talk too much on set, wait to tell the head of your department a problem until the take is over unless it is threatening someone's health, and learn who you should report to. These are very important, because you can help others not make big mistakes on set, and you won't be bothering anyone on set, allowing you to work faster and more efficiently.

The Director's Role

The director's role is so important to the film because they are the leaders of the film and bring the ideas and concepts to life. The director has knowledge of everything that is going on on set and is aware of how everything is working.

Departments on Set

The camera operation department on set interests me. I would choose to be the director of photography, or a camera operator because it seems very interesting and fun to do interesting movements with the camera.

The Role of a Producer

The producer is so important because they are the driving force behind the creation of the film. Their job responsibilities will fall under the funding of the movie, the casting of the crew, and producing basic functions on set and for the movie.

Who's Who on a Movie Crew

There are so many different jobs on a movie crew because of the amount of tasks and detail there is when it comes to making a movie. Every small detail in a movie requires someone to make it. And there are also helpers to those in charge because they can't oversee everything. I've never heard of a unit production manager before watching this video.

Best Practices on Set

When on set, you need to make sure that everyone is ready for what is going to happen when you're going to say cut. All the actors and crew needs to be in place, everyone needs to make sure to be quiet, and the sound department has to be recording the sound. If none of this is followed then someone might interrupt the shot by walking through it, or making a lot of noise and it can be heard in the shot. The shot can also be ruined if the sound department wasn't rolling and there was no sound for the take.

The Hobbit Walkthrough

I learned that in a film, the process for making everything is extremely long and very detail-oriented. I was able to see that the whole process put everything together and made it the great movie that it is today. Some insights I had was that making a movie takes hard work, a lot of people, and a lot of time. I think what is interesting about the production process is that it can take so much longer than the actual shooting of the movie.
