The Magic of Film
Movies are magical, because they make people feel a certain emotion that they don't feel at all, or as intensely, or they can make people relate to a character or experience because of what happens to them in the real world. The writing and characterization within a movie will make the viewer attached to a certain character, making them feel empathy for them. For example, in the movie Marley and Me, everyone's hearts are shattered when the dog, Marley, dies in the end because the significance of the character and the writing based around them was meant for the viewers to get attached to Marley. An example of the opposite of this is the movie Avengers, or practically any superhero movie for that matter. Within these movies, buildings of very populated cities are often destroyed like its nothing, and there is no way that no body would have died from that disaster. Within the large amount of people that died in those scenes, there is a good chance there were some animals that also got caught in that mess, and some could have easily been dogs, just like Marley. The reason why you don't feel the same way for the victims here, is also in my opinion the reason why superhero movies are rarely up for any academy award. It's because the writing is not meant to attach the characters and victims to the viewer. The attachment that is made between the character and the audience is the reason why emotions are often drawn out the way they are. The combination of this and the beauty and small details found within the filming and editing is what makes movies so special and magical to me.
