Storytelling Unit Summary


3 Things that I learned in the storytelling unit are the 7 types of dramatic conflict, the different archetypes, and the Hero's Journey. I would like to learn more on how to create a unique, interesting, and relatable character. I would also like to learn on how to make interesting conflicts and not have to worry about it being cliche. I am not unsure about anything with this unit, but the thing I know least about is script writing, just because we didn't spend too much time on it. This unit was relatively pretty easy and not complicated; however, I still find it interesting and good to know the parts that I learned because the story is key to the film you are creating.

I noticed that in the boulder scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark, the editing was very fast paced and had a lot of cuts. This style of editing is used to provoke an emotion of intensity. When he was running through the hall back to the entrance, the constant cut after cut made it so that the viewer felt anxious and had them wondering if Indiana Jones would make it or not. This played a key role in opening the film because it expressed the feeling that would be provoked throughout the movie and it also showed the first trait of the main character. It showed that Indiana Jones was daring and how he could get himself out of danger no matter what.

Nickelodeon to Movie Palace

Nickelodeons were small theaters that allowed you to watch movies for a low price. They weren't anything super fancy, but they were extremely popular for the price and for what it provided. The first movie palace was called "The Regent" and was more directed towards the wealthy to come to the theaters. It would cost more, but the palaces would be this grand and luxurious interior. The transition from nickelodeons to movie palaces probably was made because people started realizing that the viewers' experience wasn't solely based on what they were watching, but the environment they were in when watching it. The first to make movie palaces also knew there was a profit to be made to be giving the viewers more than what they originally wanted. Movie palaces were so important because they paved the way for modern movie theaters. It made it known that movie theaters started emphasizing not only the movies being played, but the experience to be had.

Coldplay Music Video

The theme of theme of this music video is: it's hard to lose someone close to you. The singer in the music video is going back in time because he wants to try to rewrite the past. The singer at the beginning of the video was definitely more distressed than how he was at the end of the video, showing how he was degrading over time after he lost his friend/significant other.
