What an Editor Does

An editors role in a movie is to put shots into scenes then sequences then the final project. The way they arrange the shots is very important to tell the story and to make sure that the director's idea is brought to real life. Some of the responsibilities that editors have are editing together video, editing together audio, and working with special effects.

Why is Copyright Important?

Copyright is important because it protects one's work and makes sure that no one else can take it and use it as their own. I have encountered having to cite sources within essays and other writings because of the copyright rules they had. One time I was writing about World War II in class and I had to research certain information on it. The article I found was copyrighted so I had to search up the correct way to use that information within my essay so I searched it up and learned how.

Copyright and Fair Use

Fair use is the way you can use copyright works within your works. In school work and education, news reporting, and parody or comedy. You need to use only small parts of the source and make and make sure you don't solely use it and add on to it yourself. We can apply fair use for when we have to use music in this class but its copyrighted.

Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship is being polite online, and not doing stuff that you shouldn't be doing. It consists of not being toxic online, not doing illegal activities, respecting copyright, etc. It is important, because we have laws in the real world, so we need to have laws online or else everyone might start going crazy and messing things up.

21st Century Skills

The 21st century skills are skills that require one to think about what they're learning and to question it and think about it creatively and critically. Student's need to have a basic understanding technology now to help them with their work and research. The students also need to be able to work collaboratively with others to accomplish a task. The last 21st century skill is to be prepared for the real world and be ready to be an active citizen. One way we can use the skill of creative thinking in this class is, if we learn about an important part of film, take sound for instance, then we can try to take what we learned and apply it to different ways in a film that was not conventional before. We are often going to use technology in this class to make our films, whether its for editing, filming, etc, we are going to need a great understanding of how to use that technology in order to make sure we get the best results. We are also going to be working with other students on ...

Career Readiness Skills

Career readiness skills are skills that will help you be prepared for a professional work environment. Some of these skills are punctuality, strong work ethic, and good etiquette. Being punctual is very crucial for a job, because it means if you're going to be on time or not, and being on time will be a very crucial part of any job. Having good work ethic demonstrates your hard work and ability to not be distracted by anything, this shows your employer that you can do a task well and with your full effort. Good etiquette is important for any job, because it shows whether or not you can be respectful and well-mannered. No one wants to hire someone who can't show the simple attribute of respect, no matter how ell they do their job.

Safety and Etiquette Wrapup

Safety and etiquette are both very important because that will be how you can save lives, and continue getting jobs. Safety not only will help save your own life, but it can save others. For example, if you don't rig a light correctly, then it could come crashing down and smash someone. Etiquette will make sure that whoever you are working with will like you, if you're rude, or loud, or just misbehaving in general, then you are not likely to get hired back on a job with any of the same people. I think that the hardest part of safety will to be to not rush when you are running a little late, because sometimes I tend to rush when I'm going late, so I will need to work on taking my time and making sure everything is in order when I am running out of time. For etiquette, I think the hardest part for me may be to not take set heat personal. I am used to telling people to not be disrespectful to me or others so I think I might find it hard at first to not take it personally. I w...

6 Rules for the Set

Three key points that this article makes about set etiquette is to do your job, don't disrupt others, and to help each other out if they need it. The article talks about how you should focus on your job and no one else's, especially if it's a completely different department, within the first rule. For example, someone who is in the art division shouldn't talk to the director on how they are doing their job, or how they think a shot should be. Rule #4 states that you should keep to yourself until the end of the take. This means to not speak when the crew is filming on set, and if you have to talk then wait until the end or else you might ruin the take. Rule #5 is all bout helping each other. It talks about how if there is something wrong with a take and it is your job to talk about what's wrong, you don't have to call out the actor or crew on what they did wrong in front of everybody. An example of this is the Script Supervisor, who makes sure the takes have con...

Unsafe Situations

There was one time when I was teaching someone how to do a back flip. When I was helping them with it, I would count down then spot them and help them go back over their head. One time however, the person thought that they could do it by themselves and went straight for it. They messed up and fell on their head/shoulder, which leg to a fractured collarbone. He also hurt his toe when he landed. This situation did not make me feel good because I was in charge of him and he was doing really well but then he injured himself and could no longer do it. What went wrong is that he went when I didn't tell him to and when I was too far away to spot him. I could have been closer to him and also made it sure that he wouldn't go before I told him to.

Set Safety

Set safety is important because some of the situations on set can be deadly. If you're not careful then you could possibly lose a body part, or severely damage one, like your arm or leg, or head. Some of the dangers you should look out for are wires, loose objects overhead, and lights. With wires you have to be careful about tripping over them, or if there's a faulty wire it can release a deadly shock. With loose objects above your head that aren't tied down correctly, they can easily fall on you and crush your skull, or foot or leg or anything for that matter. With lights, you can burn yourself very easily with them because they are so hot, but they are also very bright, meaning that you can burn yourself with one.

Vertical Video

Vertical video is a bad idea because you don't use your full screen when looking at it in any video player that uses a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. Videos are usually shot horizontally because that's more natural for us to look at, and it's been like that since the beginning of film. Nowadays, the standard aspect ratio when watching a video through a video player, is 16:9, for example, the resolution for 1080p video is 1920 x 1200(a 16:9 format).  The ratio is 16:9 not 9:16 so that is why we shouldn't shoot vertical. I have shot a vertical video before, simply because apps like Snapchat or Instagram favor a vertical video and make it easier for people to watch and shoot one. I only have shot in vertical format when I know that the video will not be used in any other way of viewing.

The Magic of Film

Movies are magical, because they make people feel a certain emotion that they don't feel at all, or as intensely, or they can make people relate to a character or experience because of what happens to them in the real world. The writing and characterization within a movie will make the viewer attached to a certain character, making them feel empathy for them. For example, in the movie Marley and Me , everyone's hearts are shattered when the dog, Marley, dies in the end because the significance of the character and the writing based around them was meant for the viewers to get attached to Marley. An example of the opposite of this is the movie Avengers , or practically any superhero movie for that matter. Within these movies, buildings of very populated cities are often destroyed like its nothing, and there is no way that no body would have died from that disaster. Within the large amount of people that died in those scenes, there is a good chance there were some animals that a...

Beginning Goals

Here are my goals 1. I want to learn about all the jobs on a film crew and what they all do. With this, I can figure out which job I would want to pursue later on in life. I also want to learn how to do each job well, so even if I am not doing a certain job then I will be able to help out someone with their job on set if they're needing of help or advice. 2. I plan on volunteering/ participating in at least two of the events mentioned at the beginning of the year (CreaTV, Cinequest, San Jose Film Festival, and Skills USA). I believe that these would all be great opportunities and experiences for me to use what I learned in the classroom in the outside world. 3. Learning how to proficiently use a cinema camera by the end of the year, if not semester. I have used a DSLR/mirrorless camera in the past before, but it seems it is a whole different ball park when it comes to the Sony FS5, or any other cinema camera.
